FDM 3D Printed Models

Hello World!!

I wanted to build a space I could share my projects and art, and act as a home to all my nerdy online shinanagins.

I have come to realize over the years that I enjoy trying out new hobbies, often in rapid short bursts before I burn out. This has lead to me learning many fun things, investing into them enough to have the tools and knowhow enough to have become rather handy.

While I have abandoned and unlearned many of these past hobbies like origami note folding that took up much of my sixth grade year, I have kept several in my arsenal of anti-boredom tactics.

I was a very avid gamer growning up. Most of my early games where N64 era, but my first were NES, SNES with bites of Sega from a friend. I still play to this day, although I don’t put in the hours I used to until my late 20’s. Partly from burn out and feeling modern games all kinda blend together. Mostly from trying and keeping more hobbies.

I got into 3D printing in 2019 when I bought a used CR10 FDM printer off Craigslist. It took some figuring out to become good with the machine, I mainly wanted it for making brackets and lightweight parts, and because I’m computer nerd too. Eventually I started printing 3D busts and painting them after seeing a few of my friends and their expensive hobby of Warhammer making cool armies and painting them.

Their models were super detailed, and looked amazing after getting painted but no matter how good I felt I had gotten, the quality and detail I was starting to want just wasn’t feasible with a FDM. So over the end of summer and most of fall 2023 I spent several hundred dollars on a 2000 point Warhammer army.

I tip my hat to the rare breed of madman who builds multiple armies. I fell out about halfway in, vowed to return one day, and cast my army to the shelvelands. The clipping out tiny pieces and glueing them together while not gluing your fingertip to it. Filing where you clipped for that proper clean model. Finding that 1 unique piece that looks like 9 other pieces.

Then you get it all glued together, and while applying primer it sinks in just how detailed the model is, followed by learning deep crevices are hard to prime. How the hell are you supposed to paint fine details in there?! Let’s take a break from the big cool model and work on some of the smaller minon models. Time to build and paint the same thing a dozen times.

Someday, I’ll unbanish my army before the dust fills their graves and join that top-tier echelon, then I’ll have to learn how to play. Hopefully that part is a bit easier for me. But as Chrismas grew closer, I started looking for a gift to myself to feed my hunger of something creative to do. So in 2024 I remodied that low detail problem when I bought, used again, a Creality resin printer.

I cant help but laugh at it, the one use for 3D printers I had no real interest in is now 90% of what I use them for. I’ve always had a respect for people who paint detailed models, it’s just that I didn’t consider myself to have that kind of skill and discipline to see that type of project though to the end. I shared my Robin model with the buddy who originally gave me the desire to try painting models, and he was playfully upset I could paint better than him.

Now, to be honest, we had been drinking. He was getting married two days later and it was his bachelor. He may have just been cross eyed enough to get a stereoscopic vision of the picture I showed him.

But that gave me the motivation to keep at it, and everyone I showed off my projects too seemed to really like them. Even the internet said it looked good enough I could sell them. While that would be nice, and I’d be interested in doing so, I do it for the hobby.

And like many hobbies before painting models, I slowly burnt out. I had been seeing this Cricut thing in my travels across the internets, and got one to see what it can do. Making stencils for woodburning has been my recent kick, with a random test project to learn what the machine can and can’t do. Few glass etching attemps with stencils, iron on shirt decals, stickers. You can even put a pen in the machine and have it draw you a picture. It’s infusable ink, so there’s someway to transfer it to clothing or something. I don’t know, I’m still figuring out the basic cutting stuff with it.

Most of my projects have been related to entertainment hobbies like videogames, TV and movies, anime and cartoons, computer and electronics. I would like to get into cosplay and making costumes and props. I think I could do some cool stuff with all the bits and pieces I’ve learned over the hobbies.

I’m secretly just the worst at drawing, but I like dabbling in video editing too, I’m just starting to stream and record my projects as their are made, scratch that A/V itch when it shows it’s face. A wild fantasy of mine is to make an anime or cartoon someday. It’s not something I could do alone, so I want to start meeting people who share my interests and creativity. That’s where you come in.

If you’re still reading this, I feel like there’s a pretty good chance we’d click. Join my Discord server, hit me up, share your projects. If Discord ain’t your thing, I stream on Twitch, or you can check out my YouTube or Instagram. If social media is something you avoid, you can use the Contact Us Form. It’s not as fast or reliable as my socials, so only use this method if you have no other means.
